The Standard American Dream Formula Reimagined

While there are many examples of people in American society who have not gone to college and have become billionaires running their own corporations, these people are the exception, not the rule. What I've found is that the standard formula for success is:

1. Go to school
2. Get good grades
3. Get a good job
4. Climb the career ladder, and
5. Retire

Now I used to think this was only a formula in the United States or in the Western world. However, I've since tested it in different cultures, countries and languages around the world, and everyone I talked to said "Yep, that's pretty much the formula."

But what if there was an alternative formula? What if instead of "go to school, get good grades, get a good job, climb the ladder and retire", we said, "Put yourself in a learning environment. Learn how to learn. Discover your true purpose for being here in this lifetime on this planet. Then, take what you've learned and expand into the future and enjoy the abundance that is coming to you because you're aligned to your true purpose and you're sharing your gifts with the world!" What if that was the formula for success? Wouldn't that be much more powerful?

The Career Train Allegory

What follows below is an allegory I developed with these two success formulas at play together on what I call, The Career Train. The allegory starts when you're at home and your parents ask you, "Which train station do you want to go to? And what train do you want to get on?" And you're like, I don't know, I'm only 16 years old. But you send a few letters out to your favorite train stations, seeing if they have room for you, and not long after, you get a letter back from your favorite train station saying, they have room for you. So, you excitedly pack your bags and head off to the train station.

When you get to your favorite train station, they tell you that you need to study hard to get your ticket to get on the train. So, you spend years and years studying and getting filled up with knowledge about whatever train it is you're going to get on, and you're still not even sure which train you want to get on.

Now your family and friends say, "You're good at math. So, why don't you get on the engineering train." You don't know any better. So you're like, "okay I'll prepare myself to get on the engineering train." So, you study hard, and the train station finally gives you that ticket to get on the train.

As you get on the train, you were told you need to work your way through the train to the engine and be the conductor if you really want to be successful. However, as you're going forward more cars get inserted ahead of you. You're disappointed but stick to the plan. Everything is going fine until your career train derails. Luckily, there is another train speeding by. You catch it and find yourself on the last car again.

Going forward you decide to take a nap in the sleeping car. When you wake up, you realize you're on the wrong train going NOWHERE! However, during your nap you had a dream that revealed your TRUE PURPOSE in life. You are so excited. You want to jump off the NOWHERE train and and go after your TRUE PURPOSE. Unfortunately, career trains keep accelerating once you board them. So, it becomes harder to jump off year after year. As result, your resigned to staying on the NOWHERE train as your dream slowly fades.

The next car has a sign that reads, ""Learning Environment." As you step inside, you meet a train guide. You tell him about your unhappiness on this NOWHERE train, and your dream about your TRUE PURPOSE. The guide says, "There's a way off the NOWHERE train without getting hurt." You can't believe it, and you press him for more information. The guide tells you, "All you have to do is envision living your TRUE PURPOSE and how it would make your dreams come true." So, you begin to meditate on living your TRUE PURPOSE. As your focus becomes clearer, you notice another set of tracks being laid down alongside. The guide informs you that this is all part of the plan, and you go back to your task of envisioning living your TRUE PURPOSE.

A little while later your guide says, "It's now time for you to get off the train going NOWHERE. You don't understand but the guide leads you to the platform between the train cars. Your guide tells you to look down the tracks running alongside. As you peak out, you can't believe it! The engine that you were envisioning all along in the Learning Environment is speeding towards you. As your TRUE PURPOSE train comes alongside, you step across and can't believe you're on your own train now! You are the conductor and you didn't get hurt! Now, as the conductor, you push the accelerator forward and your TRUE PURPOSE train takes off leaving your old career train to NOWHERE behind on the distant horizon as all of your wildest dreams begin to manifest as you press on into the future!

Allegory Lessons

So what are the key points in this allegory?

1. There's an alternative to the standard formula for success of "go to school, get good grades, get a good job, climb the ladder and retire." You can find your TRUE PURPOSE and what you're really here for and use your TRUE PURPOSE to expand into the future and give your gifts to the world and live abundantly in return for giving your gifts to the world.
2. Sometimes you can get lost along the way in what other people tell you to do instead of listing to your heart and your soul about what you're really here for.
3. Sometimes it takes guide to show you the way to your TRUE PURPOSE.

On-line Training/Group Coaching and Live Event!
