No Success without Commitment

Sep 13, 2018

Welcome back this week. Last week, I invited you to my upcoming group coaching and workshop in Austin, Texas entitled Your True Purpose Business Formula . What that's all about is really committing to your true purpose and deeply living it in your life. So this week, I want to talk about commitment and pick apart a famous quote by WH Murray from The Scottish Himalayan Expedition in 1951. I will break it down, and see what he was really talking about. If you haven't seen or heard this quote before, start the video above, close your eyes, let me read it to you, and feel the power in what he's saying.

He says, "Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans; that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. A whole stream of events, issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of incidents, meetings, and material assistance which no man would have believed would have come his way. I learned a deep respect for one of Goethe's couplets, 'Whatever you think you can do or believe you can do, begin it. Action has magic, grace, and power in it.'" All right, let's break this down.

Commitment vs Hesitancy

The first thing he says is, "Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness." Think about your own life. Where have you wanted to do something, but you weren't quite fully committed to it. There was that hesitancy, and eventually, the opportunity passed. That's what he's talking about. So, when you know what you want, you must go for it.

Providence Loves Commitment!

Next, he says, "Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans; that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too." What is he saying here? I'm letting you know the secret to results! You have to commit yourself if you want things to happen, and once you do commit yourself, then the entire universe, all resources, and energy that can support your plan is provided to you, but you have to be committed. So, this is the real secret and power of the quote.

Commitment Trumps Plans

Then, he says, "A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of incidents, meetings, and material assistance which no man would have believed would have come his way." What is he saying? He's saying don't plan out what you're going to do exactly down to the Nth degree. If you know my history, I've been a project manager most my life and that's what we do. We plan things out, but here's the thing. When you commit to something and you say I'm going to do that, no matter what it takes, then you can't plan it all out because things are going to happen in your favor that you can't plan because the universe is on your side and you can't foresee what that means in the present.

Action, Action, Action

Next, how does he end it. He quotes Goethe, "Whatever you think you can do or believe you can do, begin it. Action has magic, grace, and power in it." What's he saying here? He's saying action is the opposite of hesitancy and inaction from the beginning of the quote; that when you take action, there's a power in action. So, if you don't know what to do about what it is that you're up to in life, what's the one thing you can do? Take some action! Any action! It doesn't matter because whether it's the right action or not, you're going to learn from that action, then you're going to take the next action, and the next action, and the next action.

Invitation to Action

All right, with that quote on commitment, I want to, again, invite you to my group coaching and workshop on your true purpose, discovering your true purpose, and how is it you can get paid well to bring that to the world. So, if that's something that turns you on and is like, "Yeah, I'd really like to figure out how to do that." Then, click the button in the post this week and I look forward to seeing you on the group coaching and at the workshop. It's going to be a ton of fun and I look forward to seeing you there.
